Isn't a Komodo dragon's bite poisonous, like a Gila monster? If so, this sure seems like a bad idea...

This is what is now being exhibited in the Elephant House at the Bronx Zoo.

I believe the scientific jury is still out on whether the Komodo dragon is venomous.
Pat, Komodo dragons aren't venomous like gila monsters and beaded lizards but their mouths are full of toxic bacteria. They can bite and chew and the fluid in their mouth goes in your system, not good. Captive ones have been known to be pretty calm and permit human contact, but as animal people know "stuff" happens. I've recently seen some talk that some scientists would consider komodos venomous. The general thought has been venomous reptiles inject their venom with specialized teeth, poison is absorbed through the skin or digestion. Komodos don't inject (no specialize teeth or venom glands) but chewing certainly aids in absorption.
