This is part of the Buttons wardrobe assigned to James Stewart. As Stewart wrote later, most actors want to play a clown. He wrote of his hopes to DeMille, who had a major part written for him which became a theme of the film. But it had serious repercussions. Buttons had previously been a surgeon, who had euthanized his terminally-ill wife, and was on the lam. That he be cast in a sympathetic role angered many religious groups which protested "mercy-killing", and DeMille heard no end of it.
