Did he purchase some props and animals from Jim Clubb?
The barrel is ideally engineered, and impressive in performance. My one reservation is the space it would take up in the arena--realizing the creators of the act would have also thought of this, and are making it work.
Roger, you're right about the wheel taking up an enormous amount of space. With Jim Clubb's mixed act of the 80's and 90's (I think this is his wheel, and the big liger inside may also have come from him after it's run in Japan a few years ago) the wheel served dual duty. The wheel was turned to the front between the jump pedestals, lions and tigers on either side, leopards on top, and hyenas in the center. When I had this act ('97-'98) there was only one hyena (4 tigers, 2 lionesses,1 liger, 3 leopards, 2 black bears and 1 hyena) following the opening pyramid the wheel was turned, a tiger went on top and the male black bear went inside. A good picture trick, but a pain in the butt to navigate every show.
During some years, Louis Knie Austrian National Circus showed all the best européan cage acts, many from the Jim Clubb-Chipperfield firm : lions with J.Campolongo, léopards with Emile Smith, Tigers with Louis Knie himself and of course the superb mixed act. A gréât chance for all europeans to discover the talent of Miss Patricia White ... and the lights and music of the show were so gréât !! First Time (and the last i béliève unfortunatly) i saw a stripped hyena in a ring. The last beasts of the mixed act toured in Spain présented by Billy Smart junior in Circo Mundial
Holy cow! Thank you for the nice comment,J.P.! The Austrian National Circus Louie Knie was a beautiful show, and you are so right about the music. Live band, I wish I could remember the conductor's name. It was my understanding he wrote the original score. Some of it was so fun and jazzy I could hardly keep from dancing during the act! A talented gal named Marnie Dock, Chipperfield trained, also worked it for a while on Mundial.
I'd also like to add that I, too, thought this mixed act of Jim's was beautiful. Please understand I take zero credit, I simply stepped into a well trained act and worked it. I enjoyed every minute, too.
Kind of like, "Ooo Pat! Your little flower garden is so pretty!" to which I reply "Thank you. But God made the flowers, I just arranged them in the dirt."
It's important to give credit where credit is due to keep things in perspective, don't you think?
