I arrived in San Diego in June 1969 to join a Navy unit band stationed at the North Island Naval Air Station. In July, the Ringling Red Unit was in town and I had my first chance to see Gunther, who was making his first American tour. That summer, the Big John Strong Circus played an extended engagement down in San Diego’s “Old Town” area. Then in late September, Rudy Bros. Circus appeared in Balboa Park. I spent two days on the lot, taking pictures. “Captain” Horn not only let me photograph his act, but also positioned me just outside the big cage so the bars wouldn’t be in the way. Needless to say, being so close to the animals was quite a thrill. A few weeks later, my band deployed on the aircraft carrier USS HORNET to pick up the Apollo 12 astronauts after they returned from their moon landing mission. It was quite a year.
