Birth: 1876
Death: May 28, 1904

Pastor's Wife

Daughter of W. C. and Tennie DuVal from Southwest City, McDonald County, Missouri.

United in marriage Dec. 4, 1894 to John Henry Messer by Rev. Lewis Kelley, at the home of Mrs. J. H. Gibson, Grove, Indian Territory. Mrs. Gibson had not met Jenette before the wedding, but knew Jenette's folks in Southwest City, Mo. Mrs. Gibson had known John H. for about 9 years. Present at the wedding were Mrs. Gibson and her children, Mat Warmack from Southwest City, Mo. and the granddaughter of Mr. Splitlog.

Children born to this union:
Raymond D. Messer 11/20/1897,(IT Dawes 26340);
Clarence C. Messer 1/9/1900, (IT Dawes 26339);
Paul Virgil Messer 12/16/1901, (New Mexico Territory Dawes 26341);
William Woodcock Messer 5/19/1904, (New Mexico Territory Dawes 4647M). (Children born between 1902 and 1906 were admitted if their parents were on the 1902 roll).

A daughter named Violet may have been their first born, but died as an infant. However, she is not mentioned in the Dawes packet for John H. Messer.

Sadly, Jenette died May 28, 1904, probably from childbirth complications.

Jenette, a white woman was listed as Cherokee by adoption intermarriage. Her husband John claimed his Cherokee blood through his mother. In order to enroll the family must provide evidence of marriage certificate and birth affidavits of each child.
Feb. 1902 J. H. writes to the Commission that my wife spells her name Jenette. Sep. 1902, Jenette is requested to appear before the commission and testify relative to her right to enrollment by intermarriage. An interview March 2, 1903, Mts. J. H. Gibson testified to the Commission regarding the marriage of Jenette and John H. Messer.
The family never returned to the Cherokee Nation Oklahoma to live on their allotted land.
