The halter looks like some I use on fisty new pets when we go to the park. HALTY is the name I think. Can't train with them as you can break an animals neck by jerking too hard. Gentle Leader is another name. Great shot of Pat. She works with a lot of different animals. Her wardrobe has greatly improved over the years. Still built like a teenager.

What a magnificent animal. I've always loved giraffes, since knowing Hi-Boy and Lo-Boy we had in the Oaks, and the ones we had at Lion Country.

OK, animal folks: Who can name the five kinds--forgive me--subspecies--of giraffe?

Who can name the subspecies of zebra, and which ones are Pat working now?

Just looking at the size of this animal is scary. I would rather be in a cage of cats any time. Pat sure looks great here. I hope the people over seas appreciate what a fine performer Pat is. Wish she were here. A great talent that we sorely need in the animal world.

Pat White was on Carson and Barnes for several years working the cat act and a lion riding and elephant. At that time they had five rings of elephants and I believe she presented one of the elephant acts. She might have worked a liberty act too.

I'm not sure which race he is, but his name is Massai.

Regarding Pat overseas, earlier this year I posted a photo of three American girls in the Circus Krone Winter Quarters, in Munich Germany. Pat White, Trudy Strong, & Patricia Zerbini, I was very proud because they all left an indelible mark in Europe, they are all remembered, & respected these many years later.

On the subspecies of Zebra, let's not forget the now extinct Quagga (Equus quagga quagga),the last one of which died in 1883 in the Amsterdam Holland zoo. Luckily for us there are photos of one that lived earlier in the London zoo. It had white legs and tail, brown body and stripes only on the neck and face. There were quaggas here in USA on traveling menageries in the 1830s.

THOSE QUAGGI MENTIONED SOUND LIKE ZONKEYS [CROSS BREED] THAT ARE NOT UNCOMMON AND HAVE SIMILAR MARKINGS AND MORE DOMESTIC IN TEMPERMANT.

To find out more about the quagga which was a subspecies of the Plains zebra, go to www.quaggaproject.org. The giraffe in this photo is a Masai/Reticulated cross. The first two zebras in the photo are Burchell's, the second two are Grants. Elephants: worked Babe (Asian) and Kiki (African) at Jungle Larry's.
In 1982, Carson and Barnes, Bunny Libby and Sis. 1983, 5-act Alta, Isla, Opal, Kelly and Traci.
1984 '85- Kay,Barbara and Suzy. In '86 Suzy was replaced with Minnie; worked Kay Barbara and Minnie until leaving the show at the end of 1990. Liberty horses and menage horse from 1982-90.

Thanks Bill for the kind words. I recall it was pretty expensive having one more for the road, We sure tore hell out of Dinney McGuires budget, but that Sapporo was sure good. In regard to Robert Thornton, he did start his career in the early Al G Barnes years and spent most of his career with that show being the Equestrian Director when it was a maqjor circus with so many great trainers. I understand he was highly respected and that he could work any animal act on the show ,wild or domestic. This in the days of Louie Roth, Mabel Stark, Cap Ricardo, Austin King, Max Sabel and later t6errel Jacobs, Bert Nelson, Mark Smith, John Smith and so many others. For you younger trainers and historians, during Al G Barnes time of personal ownership, before ACCP and later RBBB,the motto of the show was EVERY ACT AN ANIMAL AND EVERY ANIMAL AN ACTOR, FEATURING 40 DANCING GIRLS AND FORTY DANCING HORSES. Thornton did leave in mid-twenties for a period of Equestrian Director on the big John Robinson Circus. the bandwagon did a wonderful story-interview of him a few years back. He was quite a guy. I believe that the principal zebra trainers were Max Sabal and Austin King.
