I’ve been thinking about the flatfooters a lot while we’ve been here in NY. Sometimes I think that the Howes, Baileys, Lents, Turners et al get a bad rap from popular writers. The circus men from the environs around Bethel, Somers and to the east were fierce business operators and played tough against competition, but hell, they popularized elephants, gave Barnum a job, combined animal shows with equestrian “circus” and invented the bigtop. Not a bad list of accomplishments.
