"Targa" #3

When we showed Queens with Big Apple it was always in Cunningham Park and the show set up on the parking lot of a facility with a series of tennis courts. In 1987 while playing there the Red Show was down town in the Garden and on one Sunday a bunch of us decided to drive down to where the train was spotted, watch them load out and cut up some jackpots. I almost had Alan Slifka talked into going but he finally thought better of it.
King Tusk was the feature but I was surprised to see my friend Lee Keener walking with the herd, I was told "Tommy" had already been loaded in his truck down at the Garden and Lee was just making the walk to help Gunther.
After the elephants were loaded in the cars Lee called me over to one side, looked all around and whispered "Targa dropped dead this morning with the Blue Show up in Providence".
My first thought was "Why are we whispering?" but despite having only been with the show a few months Lee had already mastered the art of Secret Keeping.
On the same lot in Queens six years later almost to the day, I received an emergency phone call, I walked over to the phone booth by one of the tennis courts only to learn from Ted that Axel had just been killed.

In a nut shell, after many years of trying, two calves were born at Ted's place in Williston. Kenny was anxious to get both mothers and nursing calves on the show for a myriad of reasons.
The easy way to pull this off would be for Ted and Axel to swap jobs with Ted bringing the newborns with him.
Axel wasn't happy about this at all since the Williston job was and remains akin to herding sheep.
For some unknown reason it fell to Dr. Houck's lot to talk Axel into the change. So he arrived on the Blue Show lot early one morning in Ashville and convinced Axel to fly with him to Williston and check the place out since there was no matinee and they could be back in plenty of time for the night show. Axel agreed, picked up his video camera and they left immediately.
Once there the tour was made, everything seemed to alright and they were ready to return when Axel decided to return alone and use up the last of the video tape. He entered one of the pens in which several elephants were roaming free and while taping was blindsided and fatally injured.
The heartbreaking part came when word got back to the show his family had no idea that he had even left the lot.

The one most important thing to me on this blog is the real people who lived and breathed animals. Especially elephants. The information written here is from or about the people who were actually there. Not like those weirdos from you know where who could not potty train a child if they had ever had one. They even live with much younger men who don't know any better either. Just used for working their tails off. Cheap labor with few benefits. They don't need them for tax breaks as they don't pay taxes anyway. Nothing against younger men, but hey give them some credit for all the work they do even if they do not know what they are doing about elephants. Just building and reparing the property. Maybe I need to get me one of those guys.

This was not Axel's MO at all to go around elephants he didn't handle. Totally out of character for him and a very sad day.

I wrote the second item above but for some reason it came out anonymous.

Always wondered if the place he died was the Hidden Ringling Compound? Is Williston the same place? I'm guessing not but have to ask? Also was the elephant that got him one of the CW elephants or one of Axels old retired one's? I have hear so many differant versions of course so thanks for clearing it up!

Is the Williston farm still in operation for retired RBBB elephants?

The elephant in question came from the Bobby Moore herd and Axel had a previous go round with her. Can't remember her origin before that, but I'm sure Buckles would know.

Some of the most interesting comments regarding Axels last day with us...A good friend to all and still missed..I can still remember the last time I saw Axel...It was day of the
Washington, D.C. circus stamp unveiling....I was on my way south to open some Hanneford towns and went by the way of D.C. So, when Axel came by parading the bulls on the D.C. streets he spotted me and walked over to the curb to say Hello and shake my hand.....Next thing I knew he was no longer with us...

I agree, I unfortunately can't remember the last conversation with Ted! That bothers me! Jewell is gone too but I do remember this last goodbye with him!

This is the main reason for my quest to find friends who made an impression in my life. Seeing "OKIES" tombstone was how I found that he had died. A year too late. To many I want to say thank you and to many more to appoligize. So far I have found most of the people, but one still not found. Probably the most important one. I made new friends while searching for the old. You just never know who will turn up.
